American Soldier

A. I think the most meaningful picture would have to be the picture titled "A Bark Hello" because it shows Ian's face realizing how tough his superiors were and what he had just gotten himself into.

B. The images work together to showcase Ian's emotions at different points in his journey, showing how much he evolved.

C. The captions enhance the photographs in that they always thoroughly describe what Ian is feeling, and describe the exact time he is feeling it. So, in that way, it makes viewers feel like we're watching it firsthand.

D. Ian Fisher is an ambitious high school student who decides to join the army. He struggles at the beginning with behavioral issues and struggles to keep up, but he eventually gets much stronger. He faces challenges such as a drug problem as well as finding his own self connected to his home and in the military, but he eventually pushes himself to learn and find good friendships. After returning home for good from Iraq, he marries his girlfriend Devin, who he loves.

E. Usually in the captions, the first sentence is written in present tense and the following sentences are written in past tense.

F. 1) There are about 3 detailed sentences in the captions on average.
2) The first sentence usually provides info that is visible to viewers.
3) The second sentence usually gives us info that happened right before or after what's seen in the picture.
4) Usually, if there is a third sentence, it has a quote.
5) Yes, a large amount of captions do.
6) There are a very small amount that have 4 sentences, but there are only 4 sentences if a lot of background information is necessary or a major event is happening.

G. I think it's possible to tell a story with just photos and captions because it's interesting to tell a story just by looking at the subject's emotions on their face, and the captions enhance it. All the pictures work together to show how much a subject evolved.

H. In some ways, it's even more interesting to tell a story with only photos and captions because it's we can see emotions through a time period. It's still important to have stories told through just photos and captions because that's what a photojournalist really does.
